  • The total cost of asthma in Michigan is over $394,000,000 per year, with indirect costs over $170,000,000 and direct costs over $224,000,000.

  • Estimated costs of asthma hospitalizations in Michigan:
    • The average cost of an asthma hospitalization is $11,671.

    • The average cost for females is higher than that for males ($13,042 versus $9,409).

    • The average cost for blacks is higher than that for whites ($11,922 versus $10,549).

    • Generally the average cost goes up with age: $5,879 for children less than 1 year to $15,726 for adults 85 years and older.
