Asthma Management

  • It is recommended that persons with asthma see a doctor or nurse at least twice a year for routine asthma care. [1] In Michigan, only 33.6% of adults with asthma and 45.2% of children with asthma meet this recommendation. [2]

  • It is recommended that all persons with asthma have a written asthma action plan. [1] In Michigan, only 28.4% of adults with asthma and 43.9% of children with asthma have ever been given an asthma action plan. [2]

  • Only 7.8% of adults with asthma and 7.1% of children with asthma in Michigan have ever taken an asthma management course. [2]

  • 42.2% of adults with asthma and 48.9% of children with asthma in Michigan have been advised sometime in their life to modify their home, school, or work environment to improve their asthma.

  • About 87.5% of people ages 5 to 56 years, with persistent asthma, covered by Medicaid health plans have been given the appropriate asthma medicine – a long-term controller medicine. [3]

  • In schools…
    • 86% of schools allow children to carry and self-administer a prescribed, quick-relief inhaler. [4]

    • Only 42% of schools provide an asthma action plan for students with asthma. [4]
